The North West Artists Group - Markree Castle - October 2009

John Nolan recently attended the opening night of " Shifting Fields" an exhibition of Paintings by The North West Artists Group. The Venue was Markree Castle, Co. Sligo.

The North West Artists Group was founded in May 2009 and comprises of artists from all over the North West of Ireland. The group was created with the intention of highlighting and promoting the visual arts movement within the North West region, from both an individual artistic perspective, as well as encompassing the broader regional cultural agenda. Their aim is to promote the visual arts of the Irish North West on a national and international level while at the same time supporting the cultural vibrancy of the region through the promotion of the North West artistic scene.

The paintings in this exhibition are stunning. To see such a diverse range of styles and subjects in one group is reassuring and demonstrates that the Visual Arts is definitely alive and kicking in the North West. It is great to see artists promoting their own work - Art For Artist's Sake ! not to be missed.

Dig It - Arts in education programme co-ordinated by The Axis Art Centre in Ballymun and funded by Provident Financial

Year Four of this Arts in Education joint project with St Josephs Junior National School and Our lady of Victories Infant school saw nearly 200 young people and up to 10 teachers engage with artists in their chosen art form over six weeks with a celebration event in the Axis Theatre in week 6 as the project culmination.

St. Josephs Junior school started on Tuesday 14th of September with artist John Nolan teaching art to 5 first and second class groups. They worked on collaborative pieces over five weeks which will be permanently displayed in the school. Colour was the subject This project was close to John's heart as he is a tireless advocate of promoting the Arts among young people. John said "Children have a wonderful unjaundiced view of the world and it is this quality which is potentially highly creative. Picasso was one artist who appreciated this creativity and admitted that he spent his whole life trying to paint like a child"

THE ARTIST CHRIS MACKIE INSPIRED BY JOHN NOLAN'S FISH PAINTINGS

The artist Chris Mackie was so inspired by John Nolan's fish paintings that he produced a ceramic vase called "Nolan Fish Vase".

The vase, 21" high and 9" at the widest point is hand made. John was thrilled that his work inspired another artist. He believes that artists should collaborate more in order to develop artistic ideas and the Nolan Fish Vase is a perfect example of creativity through the exchange of ideas and skills.

The Sheen Falls Lodge exhibits new paintings by John Nolan

The Sheen Falls Hotel, Kenmare, Co. Kerry, has invited John Nolan to exhibit his paintings during the month of August. A selection of his work can be purchased directly from the Sheen Falls Lodge Gallery. For this exhibition John explores his contemporary style of painting. Taking a more painterly approach, combined with his colourful palette, John created a body of work which is a visual feast. Each piece is consistent with John's bold and strong style of painting which has captured the attention of art collectors worldwide.

New Ken Browne Exhibition

I drove to Ken Browne's studio in Phibsborough on Saturday morning (20th june), I was anticipating something great...
Ken always invites me for a private viewing of his latest work, just before it goes on show, a huge privilege which I never miss.

I have known Ken since he started painting, a genuine guy with a talent far surpassing his own modest appreciation of it. A real artist who prefers to let his paintings do the talking while he gets on with the process of creating.

Ken is putting the finishing touches to a show taking place in July at the magnificent Greenacres Gallery, Wexford. One of the most exciting art venues in Ireland.

For this show Ken's work is inspired by music. I was anticipating something great but what I saw went beyond greatness. Ken has produced some of his finest pieces for this exhibition, a veritable collection of masterpieces.

The mood and atmosphere of each piece is redolent of Turner. Surfaces of heavy expressive texture suddenly transform into delicate areas of paper thin paint, almost defying gravity as they cling to the canvas. His bold contrasts between light and dark are pure chiaroscuro. Each piece has its own heart beat. I told Ken I didnt need to listen to the music which inspired these paintings. I could almost hear it by just looking at the work.

Ken's brave scoring marks, cut into the canvas, taking on forms of musical notation. I could see the stave and various crotchets and minims manifest on the surface. This technique is very risky and can destory a painting in seconds....... not in Ken's case. They float effortlessly, embellishing the surface with energy, movement and rhythm.
Ken Browne is a true mark maker. I am already looking forward to his next body of work.

John Nolan visits Caimileon Studios, Kinvara, South Galway

John, Andrea & Miriam with friends Mike & Lucy

Andrea Lippert and John Nolan

One of my favourite places in Ireland is The Burren, Co Clare. My friend and fellow artist Andrea Lippert lives on the border of this fertile rock in South Galway.

Andrea works from a studio located at the picturesque Tarrea Pier overlooking Kinvara Bay. Andrea is a highly talented artist, creating exciting stained glass pieces, making hand finished frames and painting in her very personal unique style. She is firmly connected with her surroundings, physically and spiritually, which manifests itself through her artistic creations.

It is always a wonderful experience to visit Andrea and view her magical artworks. She shares this deep artistic knowledge through her various workshops which are run throughout the year.

John Nolan was one of the artists who was asked by the indefatigable Caroline Levis to hang work in her latest fund raising exhibition.

Caroline, an accomplished artist and water colour teacher, started fund raising a few years ago to raise money for the installation of an all weather pitch at Alexandra College in Milltown. Caroline and her co-fund raisers have now raised money towards the laying of two 'state of the art' pitches at the grounds in Milltown, Dublin 6. They have fund raised relentlessly over the years. Caroline, because of her contacts in the art world, has managed to bring together a group of artists who help to raise funds for the development of the Club each year.

The funds raised go towards pitch development, paying for coaching and equipment. They have 7 Teams at senior level and 325 colts (aged from 5 to 15). They feel that as most of the club members cross many age generations they need to reflect that in the type of Art which is sourced from Irish contemporary artists. Artists such as John Nolan, Kate Beagan, Syra Larkin, Caroline Levis, Simon Meyler, Laura Mulligan, Karen Wilson, Chris McMorrow, Eoin O Connor and Ken Browne to name but a few. All the exhibitions to date have been very successful for both the Club and the Artists.

Poetic Visions of Syra Larkin

A few weeks ago, John visited the artist Syra Larkin in Castlegregory on the beautiful Maharee Peninsula in County Kerry. Syra lives and works in County Kerry with luthier husband Chris Larkin. It is always a pleasure to visit her studio as Syra's paintings, like the changing and developing Maharee skyline, have evolved over the years into a very personal vista of the enviroment in which she has lived and painted for over 30 years.

Her work has always reminded me of visual poetry. The contours, colour, composition, rhythms and motifs of each piece are carefully chosen and distilled into a wonderful flow of poetic imagery which leaves the viewer with a real understanding of Syra's deep sensitivity for her surroundings, both human and natural

It is always a wonderful experience to visit Castlegreory, but what makes it even more special for me is visiting Syra, a true artist whose passion for creating poetic visions will be immortalised in her paintings and long outlive the mortal coil.

"We have been subjected to agent and gallery driven production art for too many years to mention. The art market has become repetitive and boring with so called celebrity artists and over night wonders appearing at the drop of the hat. Unfortunately art lost its meaning and became a product, a repetitive pastiche of itself forced on the unenlightened public by unscrupulous so called arbiters of taste.

Last Thursday I attended the opening of Damien Cody's first solo exhibition at Gallery 53 Caple Street, Dublin. "TALK YOURSELF INTO THE PICTURE", it is a remarkable first time solo show.

I have been involved in the arts for 30 year and it is so refreshing, inspiring and reassuring to see genuine new natural talent appear on the art scene. Meeting Damien, who has evolved naturally as an artist, gives me hope that there is real talent out there aside from the predictable conveyor belt art which continues to flood the market. His sense of colour and composition is incredible considering he only started painting on a large scale 2 years ago. I can only expect to see even greater work from Damien in the future, a name to watch - Damien Cody.

The fabulously youthful Philomena Lynott did the honours on the night and opened the exhibition for Damien.
