John Nolan Attended The Opening of a Compelling Photographic Exhibition by Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin at the Ballymun Axis Arts Centre

Travelling through Canon Del Sumidero, Mexico

The display of unusual images from "off the beaten track" features more than seventy photos of varying sizes and dimensions in single and multi-frames. All framing was professionally done by the local Ballymun Youthreach Project with funding provided by the Irish language statutory body Foras na Gaeilge and Dublin City Council. All proceeds from photo sales will go to a Palestinian childrens charity in the Gaza Strip.

The exhibition will run for the month of October.

Ballymun's Axis Arts Centre saw the launch of a photographic exhibition with a difference last night, Thursday October 2nd. The display entitled "Íomhánna ón imeall" or "Images from the edge" in English by local primary teacher Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin , featured a broad range of photos from many corners of the world . Photographed by Fionntán over the past two decades theses images are compelling on many levels. With bilingual captions and detailed background descriptions we are brought on a visual journey from the light-hearted to the grim and serious. Here are some examples, Giant Caribbean turtles, the Killing Fields of Cambodia, tower blocks in Ballymun being demolished, golden fields from his native Wexford, a Sandinista rally in Nicaragua, a massacre site from El Salvador, a series of wall murals from around the world, and refugee camps in The Gaza Strip. These images are definitely not holiday snaps, they are a visual diary compiled by a person with an acute awareness of the social condition.

John Nolan's Abstract Work Receives Special Recognition At The Upstream People Gallery Omaha Nebraska

The "10th Annual Abstraction Juried Online International Art Exhibition" highlights a number of artists' works from the semi-abstract and non-objective to the purely abstract. Remarkably this show includes artists from China, Ireland, Japan, Belgium and the Republic of Tchad in Chad.

Three of Nolan's abstract pieces received special recognition and were judged solely on merit. "JOHN NOLAN of Dublin, Ireland brings power to his work by the brilliance of colour and the direct simplicity. The twelve inch square format also strengthens his work. Of special recognition are "Jazz Process 3", "Palimpsest 008" and "Palimpsest 010" even though all of his works are great in the group."

Larry Bradshaw, Professor of Art, Nebraska University, USA.

The 178th RHA Annual Exhibition selection committee, rejected a large number of art works which could have developed, affirmed and challenged the public's appreciation and understanding of traditional and innovative approaches to the visual arts. Denise Donnelly of the Bad Art Gallery takes on the task of hanging the collection of Paintings, Sculpture, Architecture, Graphic Art and Photographs which were unselected by the " Academy Members" of the Royal Hibernian Academy.

CONGRATULATIONS RONNIE

Let me introduce you to "The Jimmies", a fantastic new novel by my very good friend Ronald (Ronnie) Devlin.

This is a comic tale of loss and discovery, sickness and recovery, sin and redemption. Jimmy Moran is a man in search of something. The only problem is that he simply doesn't know what he's looking for. Laugh with Jimmy. Laugh at him. Cringe for him. Feel his pain. Mainly, however, enjoy him. Life's like this for a forty-four year old.

John Nolan visits Stephen Bennett in his Donegal Studio Gallery

In July 2008 John Nolan was given a tour of Stephen Bennett's Studio Gallery in Adara, Co. Donegal. John has been a fan of Stephen's work for many years. Both artists have the same love for colour. Stephen interprets both the Donegal landscape and its people, through his unique use of colour and expressive brushwork. Stephen is a creative artist, devoted to his craft. He is established as an exhibitor in galleries throughout Ireland and his paintings are now included in private collections worldwide.

Visitors are welcome to drop in to see the work in the Studio Gallery, but it is wise to phone for an appointment, if you want to be sure of finding Stephen at home. The gallery houses Stephen's latest work as well as a selection of prints and limited editions, definitely worth a visit for any discerning art buyer.

Calendar 2008 - Paying Homage

John Nolan has explored over the years many themes through his contemporary style and at present is working on a series of paintings paying homage to great masters.

For more info contact:

john@nolanart.com

He incorporates into his own work, images and references from paintings by Van Gogh, Modigliani, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Matisse and Picasso. This series contrasts John's motifs with many of the great icons of art history. He makes elegantly economical use of simple motifs which are explored in clever compositions.Twelve pieces from this series of work are illustrated in the 2008 Calendar. Each piece is accompanied by brief explanatory notes that discuss the nature of the paintings.
